"trated with her,but the Empress Dowager has become more en-

'raged.We are now hardly able to preserve Our throne. You should

"properly, hastily and secretly devise means with Tam Tsz-tung

"Lam Yuk,Yeung Yui,Lau Kwong-tai and others with the same aims

"for combining to rescue Us. We are in great distress and an-

*xiously waiting for your coming. A special decree,"

On the 2nd. (17th. September) I respectfully received

another secret decree bearing the Imperial autograph, as fol-

lows.-

"We now command you to superintend the Government

"Newspaper Office. Verily it is with bitterness of heart that

"We are compelled to do so, but We cannot express all this in

"writing. You should at once go abroad and by no means delay.

"We are fully aware of your loyalty and zeal. You should most

"carefully preserve your health and look after it properly, so

that by and bye you may render greater service and join with

"Us in accomplishing this great undertaking. This is Our earnest "desire. A special decree."

On the receipt of this secret command, I forthwith wept and was in doubt where to go to ask for help; at the time

was pressing and I did not know what to do. Then on the 5th. (20th.September) Our Great Emperor was deposed and confined in a secluded spot. Heaven and earth were overturned, and the sun and moon lost their brightness. Alas, what sorrow!
